"Proud History, Bright Future"

Merion CC Football Club 2010 Season

2010 Season Recap:

We wanted to express our sincere thanks to all the players and alumni that have supported us this year. It has been another step towards regaining the championship and we will continue to improve each year.

A special thanks to Andrew Addis, David McMullen, Jeff Maierhofer and Bill Brazer for all their hard work behind the scenes and to Phil Karn, Richie Graham and Paul Bredickus who have become the backbone of the team on the pitch and we appreciate all their assistance and support. We also have to mention the “old timers” – Chuck Norris, Wes Sphar, Rob D’Angelo and Julian Sur (with next generation Ronnie) who were ever presents this year.

We are excited about the future and other thanks go out to all the new lads who without their participation we would not have done as well as we did. Included in that group are our two excellent goalies Charlie Sales and Craig Schroeder who deserve very high accolades.

Last year we finished with a record of 2-3-2 (8pts) GD -13 and this year we closed out the season at 5-3-1 (16pts) GD +6 which is a huge improvement. Congratulations on Joey Sales winning the 2010 “Golden Boot” and well done lads to a great season. Here's to bringing the championship back in 2011.

MCC 4-6 Philly Cricket (PLAYOFF)
HT (4-4)

The MCC season ended with an entertaining game that everyone enjoyed. With nothing to play for except the enjoyment of playing on the beautiful Merion pitch the match was highlighted by Joe Sales hat trick which moves him to the top in the final “Golden Boot” rankings. Phil Karn had another goal and assist to his tally and Paul Bredickus who has been a phenomenal influence this entire season also added an assist. Next is the tradition pub crawl on Dec 10th and then we will start working on bringing the championship back to
Merion in 2011.

MCC 1-4 Allegro (PLAYOFF)

T. Fryzel (unassisted)

Tough loss for MCC and a result that means we can't capture the championship this year but looks like we have a tremendous future in front of us. Everyone has been excellent this year and I think we have made great strides to winning the cup back next year.

MCC 6-1 Haverford (PLAYOFF)
HT (3-1)

K. Johnson (a) R. Graham
M. Cox (a) R. Graham

R. Vartughian (a) Phil Karn
J. Heavey (unassisted)

MCC started the playoff round robin in style with an emphatic 6-1 victory over Haverford. Goals from Kirk, Matt, Joe Sales, Richie, Rob and Joe Heavey saw MCC cruise to victory and put them in the driver’s seat for next week. In the other playoff game Allegro defeated Philly Cricket 3-2 which sets up the most important game of the season next week at MCC.

MCC 3-0 Moorestown
HT (0-0)

L. Tobey (unassisted)
P. Karn (unassisted)
R Graham (unassisted)

Another excellent showing by MCC as we finish the regular season strong. No goals at half time but with help from Lee, Phil and Richie we ended the game with a 3-0 score line. We finish third in the table but joint second on points and look to have a good run in the playoffs. This has been our best regular season record for years and congratulations to everyone for your commitment and support. We now wait to see who we play on Sunday in the first game of the Round-Robin.

MCC 2-1 Allegro
HT (1-1)

J. Sales (a) M. Cox/M. Naylor
P. Kahn (unassisted)

An excellent all around performance by MCC today who beat last year's Cricket League Champions Allegro 2-1. A superbly worked first goal by Matt Naylor and Matt Cox was finished clinically by Joey Sales to start the ball rolling and a piece of brilliant individual skill from Phil Kahn rounded off the scoring for the win. The overall performance of the team was terrific and everyone had a hand in this very important win. This puts MCC in excellent position for the round robin play-offs and in second place in the Cricket League Table. Next game (h) Moorestown Oct 24th @ 10:00am.

MCC 3-1 Penn Charter
HT (2-0)

P. Karn (unassisted)
R. O'Neil (a) J. Roy
D. Popolizio (a) P.Kahn

MCC notched up a very good win against Penn Charter with goals from Phil Karn, Ryan O'Neil and Dominic Popolizio. After leading 2-0 at the half we added a goal in the second half and Penn Charter got one before the end but the points were already in the bag. This win moves MCC into joint second in the Cricket League Table and in a very good position for the round robin tournament with only two games left to play of the regular season. Next game (h) Allegro on October 17th @ 10:00am.

Haverford 1-1 MCC
HT (0-1)

J. Sales (unassisted)

MCC was unlucky to not take all three points as Haverford scored in the last minute to force a draw in this afternoon game. MCC played very well and took an early lead with a goal from Joey Sales and continued to keep the lead until one minute from time. Well done and thanks to all the lads today and special thank you to both Barry Smith for helping us with a goalie and Criag Scroeder for an excellent game between the sticks.

Philly Cricket 3-2 MCC

R. Graham (unassisted) (PEN)
J. Sales (unassisted)

A valiant effort by the team today but we came up short 3-2 to a very good Philly Cricket side. Goals from Richie Graham and Joe Sales helped keep MCC in the game but we were unable to close the gap.

Germantown Friends 0-2 MCC
HT (0-2)

R. Graham (a) T. Fryzel
P. Karn (a) M. Naylor

Great start to the season and a good turn out for the first game. Special mention to Charlie Sales who was excellent between the posts and congratulations to the goal scorers and assists.
